Since the launch of the first computer in the mid 1940’s, technology has progressed at an impressive rate. However, one thing consumer electronics always seemed incapable of being was stylish and cool. Single colour designs such as grey, black and white were about all the variation one could expect, and this was the case for a long, long time.
Apple Macintosh decided to break the mould however and is probably the single most influential company when it comes to the existence of coloured electronic hardware. In 1998 they introduced an all-in-one Macintosh called the iMac. Encased in translucent plastic and available originally in Bondi blue (and later many other colours), this machine pioneered the concept of style within hardware design and was a massive success.
A similar story is true of the evolution of DVD player designs. Japan introduced the first DVD players in November 1996 and as expected, they were not the most aesthetically pleasing machine if you compare them with the products available today. Over the past decade or so, DVD players gradually became smaller and more stylish, eventually leading to the emergence of the pink DVD player. One can only thank Apple Macintosh for their innovation and foresight, without which the pink DVD player may not have arrived.
